Latecomers are always welcome, but please arrive ready for a 7.45 start if possible, especially if it’s your first time. However, if you need to arrive half-way through that’s no problem (space permitting).

Cost £7/£4 concs. for the evening (come both nights and the Wednesday session is half-price – for limited period only). Restricted class sizes, booking optional (via Contact page).

Non-dancing friends very welcome free of charge.

You’re welcome to bring food but please don’t bring your own drinks.

Already an experienced tango dancer? Here’s a chance to learn how to really enjoy dancing when it’s shoulder-to-shoulder. (e.g. Niche and most venues in Buenos Aires) Skills like: being grounded; shrinking those big moves without losing energy in your dance; connecting with your fellow dancers in the ronda; getting beyond set steps so you can go anywhere at short notice. Not just a lesson in floorcraft for guys: useful instruction for both men and women.

Practica on selected Fridays at Niche Late Lounge

Running on an ad hoc basis over the summer; check the front page of this website to see when the next one is taking place.

8.30-10.30 or later. Admission £3 (£2 concs.), free to non-dancers.

A practica is a tango practice evening. All levels of dancer welcome! Partners and tuition provided!

Great atmosphere, excellent sound system, fine wooden floor. And Niche has an attractive 2-for-1 cocktail deal 8-11pm! (Impressive alcohol-free options for those who don’t drink and dance.)

Other evenings, weekends
Private lessons and occasional one-off workshops at all levels (including absolute beginners) – please email for details.

One-off Classes

CAMBRIDGE AUTUMN TANGO BALL WEEKEND – 3/4/5 SEPTEMBER

WORKSHOPS
Core skills for dancing happily in crowded milongas, x2: Friday 8-9.30pm, and Saturday 5-6.30pm. Separate, independent workshops – come to either or both.
£7/£4 per person for one session, £12/£7 for both sessions (Friday workshop includes entrance to practica). No partner required, booking optional.

In Europe, and particularly in Britain, our tango can get a bit incoherent, disjointed and lacking in musicality. Learning lots of new moves is fun, but sometimes it’s good to get back to basics and work on how to put those moves together – especially if we’re going to a milonga afterwards. Rather than piling on more ‘stuff’, we’ll be pulling back and looking at the bigger picture. But these won’t just be revision sessions…

The workshops, each based on a specific tango recording, will begin with a close analysis of the music and then move on to examine how we can use a couple of basic figures in ways that reflect not just the beat but also the phrasing of the track we’re dancing to. We’ll also explore how to use those figures without dancing ‘Lego tango’, and without meandering around randomly – not just to avoid collisions, but also to develop drive and coherence in our dancing. It’s not just about the guys: women can help with groundedness and presence and we’ll look at these things too.

Level: There’ll be something in these classes for everybody, so they’re suitable for anyone who can dance a few basic tango moves. We’ll be alert to differences in level, offering extra detail as we go along to those who are ready for it. (Advanced dancer = someone who can dance with a beginner in a way that they both enjoy.) There are comfortable cloakroom/changing facilities at the venues, and we’ll be arranging a trip to nearby restaurant between the Saturday workshop and the Ball.
